Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women and sadly, 1 in 8 Australian women will have breast cancer by age 85. Currently, screening by mammograms every 2 years is recommended for women between 50-74, but if you the prefer peace of mind of regular check ups, screening is available for women over 40 as an option. Younger women with a strong family history of breast cancer may be screened earlier using MRI.

It is recommended that all women perform self breast examination regularly and seek medical attention if they experience the following symptoms:

1. New lumps or thickening in the breast or under the armpits
2.  Sores or ulcers around the nipple
3. Distortion in shape of the nipple
4. Distortion or dimpling of the skin of the breast
5. Swelling or redness around the breast that is non tender

Try not to panic if you find something, as not all breast lumps are cancer. There are many causes of lumps in the breast which are benign, so it’s important to book an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. We offer ultrasound and on-the-spot pathologic diagnosis to evaluate breast lumps, and we can begin breast cancer treatment right away in the case of bad news. Some benign breast lumps are also best treated with surgical excision.
