Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts by the insertion of breast implants. This is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the practice.

There are two options for placement of the implant, either above the pectoral muscle or partially below the pectoral muscle (dual plane technique). You will also have the choice of textured or smooth implants, and of round or anatomic (tear-drop) shapes.

A thorough assessment by your surgeon will determine which of these options is best suited to your breast size, shape and overall figure.

Implant type and safety

At Integrated Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, we take safety very seriously. We adhere to the best practice and include our 14-point safety plan (Deva/Adams plan) to ensure that implants are placed free of contamination to minimise the risk of complications down the track. All ISHC patients who receive a breast augmentation are seen in yearly follow ups to ensure that the implant is closely monitored for life.

We use top-quality cohesive gel implants made by Mentor (Johnson and Johnson). These implants are covered by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

The procedure is performed as a day-only procedure in hospital under general anaesthesia. The surgeon will begin by marking out the incision (under the breast) and the implant pocket, and the surgery will take 1-2 hours. Afterwards, you will wake up with the implants in and wearing a compression bra.

You can expect swelling and occasionally some bruising around the armpit. For the first week, you will need to avoid heavy lifting and try to keep your arms below shoulder height. You will also not be permitted to drive.

• Sutures are removed at 2 weeks and you will be fine to return to office work at this time.
• Heavy lifting and exercise should be avoided in the first 3-4 weeks.
• You will need to wear a compression bra for 6 weeks following the procedure.

Usually, there is no funding access for breast augmentation surgery. In some cases of congenital tubular deformity, breast augmentation may be covered by your health fund.

What are the risks and complications of mammoplasty?

As with any surgery, breast augmentation involves some risks and potential complications. The possible risks and complications associated with breast augmentation include:

• Capsular contracture (formation of firm scar tissue around the implant)
• Changes in nipple or breast sensation
• Implant rupture
